Scientists say skeletal remains found in castle well belong to figure from 800-year-old saga

-

Researchers have made a significant breakthrough by linking skeletal remains discovered in a well at Norway’s Sverresborg castle to an account in the centuries-old Norse text, the Sverris saga. This saga chronicles the life of King Sverre Sigurdsson and recounts a chilling episode from 1197, where the body of a man, later referred to as “Well-man,” was thrown into a well during a military raid. The act was likely intended to contaminate the local water supply.

While the saga mentions the event, it offers little information about the identity of Well-man. The bones were initially found in the castle’s well in 1938, but researchers were limited to a visual analysis at that time. With advancements in technology, modern scientists have employed a range of analytical methods, including genetic sequencing and radiocarbon dating, to study the remains.

A recent study published in the Cell Press journal iScience provides groundbreaking insights into Well-man’s appearance by analyzing samples taken from his teeth. This research not only enhances our understanding of historical events described in the Sverris saga but also sheds light on the physical characteristics of individuals from that period.

This discovery emphasizes the value of combining historical texts with modern scientific techniques to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the past, particularly in terms of how narratives and archaeological findings intersect. The implications of this study extend beyond just the identity of one individual; it contributes to a deeper understanding of medieval Norwegian history and the societal practices of the time.
