I emptied my account to campaign for Tinubu, but he betrayed me – Asari Dokubo

-

Former Niger Delta militant leader Asari Dokubo has publicly expressed feelings of betrayal and neglect by President Bola Tinubu, following his significant support during the 2023 presidential elections. In a viral video that has garnered widespread attention on social media, Dokubo accused Tinubu of abandoning him after he had invested considerable resources and efforts to secure votes for the President’s election.

Dokubo’s comments come as he reflects on his role in Tinubu’s campaign, highlighting the financial and personal sacrifices he made in advocating for Tinubu’s presidency. In his outburst, he lamented the lack of recognition and support he has received since Tinubu took office, stating that his contributions have seemingly gone unappreciated.

In light of what he perceives as betrayal, Dokubo has announced his intention to pivot politically. He indicated plans to forge a new alliance with the Northern region, suggesting a strategic shift away from Tinubu in preparation for the 2027 general elections. This announcement marks a significant political maneuver as he seeks to align himself with new partners for future endeavors.

Recalling his previous commitment to accountability, Dokubo urged Nigerians to hold him responsible for any shortcomings in Tinubu’s administration. He expressed remorse for not heeding the advice of his elders who advocated for political alliances with Northern leaders, stating, “I apologise to our fathers because they were not wrong in forming an alliance with the North, and as young men, we will now start that same alliance.”

Asari Dokubo’s statements not only reflect his personal grievances but also highlight broader political dynamics within Nigeria as various factions reassess their alliances and strategies in the run-up to the next elections. His decision to publicly sever ties with Tinubu may resonate with other supporters who feel similarly disillusioned, potentially influencing the political landscape as the nation approaches the 2027 polls.
